To those in the medical transcription field — A guy at work here just told me that the doctors at the office he goes to all use laptops — they carry them from one appointment in the office to the next, and then type in all they need into a program in the laptop. The doctor told him they don’t even use transcribers any more. Do you, as a transcriber, have any experiences with doctors opting for this and getting rid of transcriptionists?

They’re definitly needed. Most doctors, whether in an office or a hospital or whatever, don’t have time to enter info into computers. It’s much faster and easier for them to dictate and have someone type it.
The only real career threat for transcriptionists is voice regognition software, which types reports per the computer. However, transcriptionists are then needed to edit the work, because what the software comes up with is not perfect. Plus I’ve never seen a doctor allow time for periods, commas, use complete sentences all the time, etc. Computer softwaree isn’t advanced enough to fix those errors.
Yeah….its really an extra vaganzzzaaaaaa…..
In MOST areas, every Doctor doesnt have a laptop. For many years, there will be a need for transcriptionist. Also, ER doctors and doctors in general practice dont have time to type everything on that pretty lil laptop… diction is always easier and more time effective. So… i dont think its an obsolete job yet. My sister (a physicans assistant) is trying to get me into the field.
And just because you are trained as a Medical transcriptionist, doesnt mean you cant branch out… lawyers use them, psychologist use them. You just gotta put yourself out there.
Federal law is dictating the phase in of the EMR–electronic medical record–which is templates on the lap top; all the ERs I work in use them–we can not dictate anything anymore. So this is something that will eventually surpass traditional transcription. When? Good question. Many many private offices are going to computer records such as Codonix, T-Sytem, Cerner, (there are quite a lot) etc. Those companies employ people however to audit the charts for completeness & up-coding. I see THAT type of job taking off.
