My wife recently attended a seminar presentation by "AT-Home Professions" for training as a medical transcriptionist. This is an online five course program at a cost of 9.00 per course with a completion expectation of six months. Is anyone familiar with this company and the online courses it offers in the medical field?

Being a Medical Transcriptionist, I attended a local seminar recently, held by At-Home Professions, out of curiosity. I asked a LOT of questions- questions I felt any prospective MT or student should have the answers to. The saleslady could not answer half my questions – questions she should have the answers to. I, also, had to correct her on the majority of the information she did give. Needless to say, I was not impressed and would not recommend AHP to any prospective MT. Also, that is a lot of money for a program that isn’t even AHDI ‘approved’.
Most employers require experience or participation in one of the top AHDI approved schools. If your looking into Medical Transcription pay the extra in tuition to attend an ‘approved’ school. The top three schools are Career Step, Andrews, and M-Tec. Attending any other school would be a waste of your time and money. Many people have received training through inadequate programs only to find out that they are unable to find a job. AHDI sets the standards for MT courses. Employers know that graduates of these ‘approved’ courses have gained the skills necessary to begin their career as an MT.
—— AHDI is the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity – www.ahdionline.org (formerly known as the American Association for Medical Transcription).
I attended Career Step and recieved a job (at-home) less than a week after graduating. I’ve received several more job offers since, but have stuck with my original employer because of the flexibility they offer.
Career Step is an AHDI approved program and they are partnered with many of the major MT employers. In other words, their graduates get the jobs. Many companies require 2-3 years experience, however, a lot of these companies will waive this requirement if you graduate from the right school.
I recommend CS because they are partnered with MANY employers, self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than the other top 2 courses. Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program.
The SUM program is a specific set of dictations that a lot of schools use to train MTs. CS feels that the SUM tapes can become out-dated easily and are not often updated.
CS does not use the SUM tapes. The dictations that are used in the Career Step course are actual doctor dictated reports that are acquired from transcription companies. These dictations are ones that actual transcriptionists are working on in the field. They are updated frequently, so students are getting hands-on practice in the most up-to-date reports with up-to-date terminology.
Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online ‘approved’ course is the way to go. Choosing the right school is so important!
They do offer financial aid and payment plans.
I’ve never heard of that program. I would be cautious about these types of programs. There are plenty of accredited colleges that offer Medical Transcription programs and also help with career placement upon completion. Before you write that $599.90 check, be sure to ask the following questions:
*Are you an accredited institution? And if so, by whom and for how long?
*Is there any job placement assistance after the program is completed?
*What types of courses are you learning in the program?
Here are some web sites you may want to check out also:

Best of luck to you!
When I was hiring for an MT service, I chose only graduates of top MT programs.
At Home Professions may have a good program, but they do not necessarily have a good reputation among employers, in my opinion.
There are a few top schools and a whole lot of subpar ones. A good school will offer all 3 levels of the SUM CDs, CMT instructors, and a lot of student/instructor interaction.
Additionally, from what you’ve said that program is nearly $3,000. There are programs that offer interactive student forums, 3 levels of the SUM CDs, 30 online interactive modules, JOB placement assistance, Student chats w/ professionals in the business, etc.. for way under that pricing.
yes. A friend of mine went through the program and now she works from home. She says she really enjoys it. She’s actually convinced me to do it.
Just to let you know, they have an auto pay for $55 a month until completely paid off.
At-Home Professions or any other 6-month program is not the ideal place to get a medical transcription education! A GOOD school for this type of education will be approved by the AHDI approval program (ACCP). It takes an average of 12-18 months to complete a good, legit medical transcription course and costs in the neighborhood of $3000.
If your wife would like a SUPERIOR education in medical transcription, she should consider M-TEC. As a graduate of this school and a working MT from home, I can assure you that this school is one of the most recognized and highly respected MT school out there. They too are partnered with numerous employers and some employers hire ONLY M-TEC grads. In addition, this school was the first school approved by AHDI and was the ONLY school on the approval list for at least 6 months.
All of the instructors at M-TEC are certified (CMTs) and each student is assigned their own instructor. M-TEC uses all college-level textbooks, includes an abundance of reference books, including the AAMT Book of Style, which is an industry necessity. M-TEC includes industry-related technology lessons in their curriculum with a full-time IT instructor on staff. M-TEC currently has a 100% placement rate of their graduates, as reported to their accreding body in Ohio, and they provide lifetime job placement support.
Further, M-TEC is extremely military friendly. As a military spouse, I experienced this firsthand when we received orders for a 3-year overseas tour. M-TEC and my instructor never missed a beat. I graduated with a very high GPA and found my first job within weeks of graduating, all while completely our overseas tour of duty. You cannot go wrong with M-TEC – just visit their message board to see what other students and graduates have to say about this incredible school!
