<description>In the USA, this is typically taught as a two year degree program in &quot;Health Information Management&quot;. As it is not certain that coding is done the same abroad as it is in th US, coursework from outside the US may be irrelevant. . </description>

<description>As a medical transcriptionist I would suggest to get into coding. Medical transcription has really changed in the last 2 years. It used to be that there were not many MTs and there was big demand for them and the salary was very good. In fact, at one time some hospitals would offer sign on bonuses or bonuses if you referred someone. Now the demand has slowed down. When I look in our classifieds most hospitals are only offering 13.00 an hour for an MT with some experienced. Most MTs who have experience and have been around for a while make 20 hourly. So, the new MTs are accepting this salary so, as long as there are MTs who will work for that, it is hard for an experienced MT to get a job making what they are used to. However, most companies or hospitals are switching to paying per line and with that you only make what you earn. Also, there is a new company called Escription that have created a voice recognition program where it learns the dictators voices and creates the report. Then, all the MT does is listen through and correct any mistake sit made. I am currently working on that now. MTs produce 500+ lines an hour. Because it is so productive, we did not need that many MTs and lost staff. It is a brilliant program. I believe this is the wave of the future for MT, so eventually less MTs will be needed. So, if you get into a MT program, find one that teaches this a s part of it.

As far as coding goes, hospital coding is very good to get into but keep in mind that you need to continually be taking seminars and classes because the rules changes all the time. It is also very tedious. You sit all day looking at patient charts and you will have to be sharp. Coding is how the company gets paid, so you will be checked often. My friend did coding. She worked hourly for a hospital and made great money but she also worked on the side as a self-employee and went to different doctors offices and hospitals. She made really good money doing that. At our hospital the coders work from home.

Also for both of these jobs, dont think you can work at home and watch children at the same time, it is impossible and you will not be productive and will get fired.
