Looks like you got a lot of spam, but no answers. :)

The thing to think about with medical transcription is that most offices won’t just hand their patient records over to a "stranger." So a lot of times, transcriptionists will need to work in the office for a period of time before they are able to work from home. Just something to think about. Couldn’t hurt to check your local ads and see what’s out there.

Good luck! I hope you find something that works well for you.

The only difference these days is you download your work on a computer and use a pedal with a USB cord. You can take online tests to update your skills. Try this site:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm
Or go to yahoo search and type in medical transcriptionist. There are a lot of good sites out there with vast information. I just finished a college course that I started 13 years ago. Now I have a certificate in it, but you don’t need to do that if you already know the job.

I have a few suggestions outlined below:

-Buy Stedman’s Medical Transcription Fundamentals and work through it to brush up.
-Get the AAMT BOS (2nd edition is okay and study it. If you are not good studying w/o a study guide, they do sell a workbook to go w/ it. This is VERY important to know the AAMT BOS so that you test well)
-Continue to study your medical terminology. Google "free medical terminology quiz" and take some online tests. Also, you can find medical terminology flash cards online w/ Quia (Google for exact site)
-Contact www.meditec.com and ask to test for their internship program, which will get you working right away.

Lastly, you need some references to start working at home in MT. I suggest:

-Stedman’s Medical Terms and Phrases
-Sloane’s Medical Word book
-Quick Look Drug book
-Stedman’s Medical dictionary
-Stedman’s Medical Spellchecker (MUST HAVE)

After you land a job or get into the internship, turn your attention to productivity and get yourself Instant Text (word expander software) and learn how to use it. For learning how to create abbreviations for your word expander Jon Knowles (Google ABCZ Jon Knowles to find his site)has a site that explains the ABCZ system for creating abbreviations. Learn the system and it wouldn’t hurt to get some of his word lists for Instant Text.

Lastly, if you don’t want to do a lot of independent Study, Meditec.com offers and Advanced Training program for MTs who have been out of the biz for a long time or for those who trained w/ others schools and need more practice. That program is about $450 and comes w/ dictation practice and mentoring.

Good luck to you.
