I know I can type 45 wpm, but I’m filling out an app for a MT position, and I don’t know how I can test myself for free via online to see how many lines per hour I estimate to do.

There is no free test for that. WPM has nothing to do with trans. minutes per hour. Somewhere around 150-200 lines per hour is pretty typical for a newbie. If you can only type 45 WPM, then you’re probably closer to the 150s.
You need to work on being able to type faster. Mavis Beacon has great typing software.
A new MT cannot type 200 lines per hour. A brand new MT, just starting on a new account, who has been to a good school, can usually transcribe about 1 hour of dictation in about 4 hours. Depending on how fast the dictator talks, etc will decide how many lines of dictation that equals, but it will NOT be 200 lines per hour. I would say that approximately a new MT will transcribe about 100 lines per hour and that is even pushing it a bit. In time, your speed will pick up as you get use to the account, and begin using productivity tools. I do agree that you should practice on your typing speed w/ Mavis Beacon software. Your goal should be about 65 wpm. Good luck to you..
There are a lot of ways to count lines, and sometimes companies use multiple methods. The link goes to an article on counting lines.
