Is an Online Medical Transcription Training Class the Right Choice For You?

July 14, 2010

Choosing medical transcription as a career means finding a good training program. Without appropriate training, you just aren’t going to find a job. But is an online training course the right way to learn to transcribe?

It can be, especially if you’re planning on working at home after graduation.

1. Online medical transcription courses are flexible.
Rather than having to go to classes at a certain time, your typical online course is at least somewhat self paced. There may be online discussions or chats at particular times, but much of your work is done when you decide to do it, not by a solid schedule.

2. Online courses are more like working at home.
If you’re going to be working at home as a medical transcriptionist, you’re going to have to get used to controlling your own time. Studying medical transcription online teaches you how to work on your own from home.

3. More flexibility to review.
When you find you have something you need a little more time on, or you need to review something you didn’t quite learn well enough, you don’t have to worry about falling behind the rest of the class with an online course.

4. Meet other students.
Just because you don’t meet face to face doesn’t mean you won’t get to know your fellow medical transcription students. Online courses usually have discussion boards where you can chat with your fellow students, talk over assignments and even keep networking after graduation.

5. Contact your instructors.
Waiting for your instructor’s office hours in college or trying to catch him or her for a few minutes after class is a pain when you attend classes in person. With online medical transcription courses you may be able to call or email your instructor and get a response on your schedule.

6. Master the technology.
The technology you use to learn transcription online is much of what you’ll use as a professional medical transcriptionist. The more comfortable you are with your computer and the internet you are before you start the job hunt, the better off you’ll be when you start to work. There may be differences in the exact software you use in your job, but you’ll have learned the basics in class and online.

7. No childcare required.
If you have kids, it’s great to be able to learn the skills needed for a new job without paying a babysitter, which can greatly increase the costs of attending school. Study online and avoid the expense while learning how to deal with raising a family and working from home.
