I was a medical transcriptionist working from home for 13 years.

Many transcriptionists get their training through a course of study while others carry their medical terminology knowledge with them from other health related fields. You would need to get the terminology down, and then get started. Many companies want experience so there's a catch-22. However, doctors and hospitals may be hiring, and after a time you can work from home as many transcriptionists do.

There's some excellent information for anyone considering a career in this field in the website listed below. No affiliation with any school or products, just good info, including real job listings in coding, billing, and transcription.

I don't know that there are that many jobs for the medical transcriptionist (or medical assistant or medical biller/coder) let alone to work at home. They are basically all scams as you'd mentioned.

General info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical transcriptionists' or such.

If still wanting to get training, please steer clear of online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, stratford career, university of phoenix and others: http://www.uopsucks.com

Regarding paralegal, I was told that one generally needs a bachelor's degree in 'something' to get employed. Irrespective of where one receives training, please also steer clear of private $$ schools and instead opt for the county vo-tech school, community college (perhaps non-credit course) or uni as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

Because of privacy issues, there are no longer outsourcing of medical records or tapes outside of the medical buildings or storage facility for transcription of materials. You would be wasting your time and education on becoming a medical transcriber.

Good luck!

Hi. You could become a medical transcriptionist, but don't take an online course. See if there are courses at a community college. Simply take a medical terminology course and a word processing course....that's all you need. Then, try to apply at hospitals or doctors offices. There are some private transcription companies where I live, but the bulk of medical transcription is done "in house" meaning, at the hospital or the doctor's office.
