Fox News has reported that online scams are up 400%.
They target the young and gullible.
If you do anything online – be ready to be scammed.

Go in person to doctors offices and ask them if they need help.
If anything online wants money up front – forget it.
Do not give anyone your checking account number for direct deposit.
Ask them to mail you a check.
Check your credit reports frequently if you give them your ss number.

Usually a medical transcriptionist goes to school to learn the medical jargon, then someone usually drops off at your home or sends through mail files to be transcribed. You have to be very focused to work from home – it’s easy to slack off. Also, if you are a social person, it’s not good for you. I often thought about it, my girlfriend does it, she said I couldn’t survive staying at home and not seeing and talking to other people every day, where her personality allows her to do this. Think very carefully about this aspect of working from home.

If you are staying in US, India, Australia, or in England then it is a good option. It needs a lot of training at least 6 months to get exposed to the medical jargon, accent, etc. I have been doing this for around 5 years plus with my present emplyment at home. Yes it is working like I thought. You can work at home, but it is better that you undergo some few months’ training + job exposure in an outside setting practically where you get the involvment of a team.. after some few months, you can proceed to work as a home MT

Most medical transcription training offered online are from non-certified training institutions. And of course, they want to promote online at-home medical transcriptioning which is not possible here in the U.S. due to patient confidentiality since the majority of medical records are not allowed off-site from their medical recordkeepers.

If you happen to take a certified medical transcription training course at a brick and mortar institution, then you are properly certified. However, finding an in-house medical transcriptionist job is another matter which in the end, you will have to decide whether ot not it’s worth all the time and effort to acquire a medical transcription certificate initially.

Good luck!

First you must receive proper training. In my opinion this is best done with one of the on-line companies that offer real job placement for their graduates. These companies will have actual working partnerships with companies who hire their graduates. Most of the training programs will tell you they have job placement assistance which means they will give you a list of companies that might hire you. You can find this list on the internet free. If you call these companies they will tell you they require 2-5 years experience. Once you have selected a training program that interests you, before you send money, ask them for a list of the companies who hire their graduates and then call the companies and verify this. If they say no, then best to look elsewhere for your education. Some community colleges offer medical transcription training but if you are considering that ask them the same questions. Chances are they don’t have connections for work at home transcriptionists. It is also very important that you seek training in acute care as that is where the money is. Clinic work doesn’t pay much.

There are 2 national companies whose transcriptionists work from home and between those 2 they have in the neighborhood of 15,000 MTs working at home. I have worked at home myself for many years and I know of 3 other MTs in my immediate community who are working from home and we all work for different companies located out-of-state. This is possible because the transcription companies have secure servers from which you receive voice files. You transcribe those files and they are sent back to the client over secure servers. There is such a shortage of qualified domestic medical transcriptionists that some companies are offshoring their transcription to foreign countries. Personally I hate this and would not want my personal information being sent to a country that is not bound by U.S. law.

To be sure, there are drawbacks to working at home. You must be motivated and disciplined. If you have these qualities then you have the opportunity to write your own paycheck. Most companies only require production of 1000-1200 lines per day and a good, experienced MT can produce that much in 4 hours.
