It depends upon where you live and whether you are an employee or you own your own business.
As an employee you are usually paid hourly, although some do pay per word or line.
If you have your own company it is usually by the word or line.
However, transcription, can be tough to break into unless you already are in the medical field and/or have a great network of doctors you know and can offer your services to.
Before you begin training, make sure there is a need in your community. Many doctors are now using voice recognition software so they dictate directly onto their computer. Others are using electronic medical records and enter all the info themselves. Some still use a transcriptionist but many of those are outsourcing overseas, especially to India. It is less expensive and with the time difference the doctor can leave at 5 pm and have reports on his/her desk in the morning.
My name is Kate Delaney and I'm from Illinois.
I created this site to share my story about how I made a mid-life career change that changed my life.
I went from being a high school graduate with a series of low paying jobs, and even some time on unemployment, to becoming a professional with a stable and well-paying career.
I found the training, financial aid, and even job placement help all online. Now, I don't have a job; I have a career! I'm a Medical Transcriptionist and I love it! Read my story.
