Medical billing is where you process insurance, medicare, medicaid, etc. for each patient encounter, more the financial end of things.

Medical Transcription is where you type (transcribe) the doctors dictation from each patient encounter, more the medical records end of things.

Medical billing bills the various insurance companies for services provided to the patients. Medical transcription is typing the notes into the patient’s files.

Medical Billing requires working with insurance companies and understanding the categories for payment.
Medical Transcription is typing up patient charts and histories from dictated tapes made by physicians. It requires knowledge of medical conditions, and the ability to spell them, as well as the ability to understand the shorthand individual doctors use to describe their treatment plans.
