I am about to return to college after 2 years and I wanted to know if there is a significant difference between the two fields Medical Billing and Medical transcription? They pay the same.. so what’s the difference?

When someone goes to the doctor, the doctor dictates the events of the visit. A medical transcriptionist converts medical reports from voice dictation to written form for documentation. Coders are responsible for identifying diagnostic and procedural information and converting this information into simplified numerical codes that can be electronically processed for payment by third party payers – insurance companies and Medicare, for example.

1. Patient sees doctor
2. Doctor dictates into microphone
3. Voice captured on system
4. File sent to medical transcriptionist
5. File is transcribed
6. Uploaded to hospital/filed for patient
7. Coder codes the document from the transcribed report
8. Biller bills the visit from the coded document
9. Insurance and patient are billed
10. Completed documents are filed for patient

One last thing to consider, many medical transcriptionists work from home. Over 80% of them do. Medical coders are beginning to work from home as well but it is not as common. Something to keep in mind!

Medical transcription means that you are listening to a recording the medical professional made about the patient’s visit and transcribing it to typewritten form.
Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims to insurance companies in order to receive payment for services rendered by a health care provider. The same process is used for most insurance companies, whether they are private companies or government-owned.
Medical Coding will assign specific numeric codes to medical services, procedures and diagnoses. The Medical Coding Course teaches you how to apply the right code in the right place and streamline the medical billing process.
Medical transcription, also known as MT, is an allied health profession, which deals in the process of transcription, or converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals, into text format.

I have taken the Career Step course. I recommend it to everyone – friends, family, strangers.
Career Step is an AHDI approved program and they are partnered with many of the major MT employers. In other words, their graduates get the jobs. Many companies require 2-3 years experience, however, a lot of these companies will waive this requirement if you graduate from the right school.
